Plasma exchange in primary biliary cirrhosis.

چکیده
Introduction Primary biliary cirrhosis (chronic, destructive, nonsuppurative cholangitis) is often accompanied by unpleasant complications such as pruritus, cutaneous lipid deposits, painful 'neuropathy', occlusive vascular disease and 'cholesterol arthritis' (Mills et al., 1978; Child, Mathews and Thompson, 1977), and all may be intractable to treatment. The pathogenesis of these clinical features is unclear but alterations of the plasma lipid profile are often present, while pruritus is often attributed to an increased bile acid pool size. Reduction of the pools of lipid and bile acids by plasma exchange (plasmaphaeresis) might improve these symptoms, and since the apparatus for this is now more widely available, the results are now reported of its use in 3 patients with primary bilialy cirrhosis.

Introdution: Primary biliary cirrhosis is a chronic cholestatic disease of the liver, characterized by the inflammation plus progressive and non-purulent destruction of the small biliary ducts, and the presence of auto antibodies against mitochondrial self-antigens. It seems that the prevalence of PBC in the western world is more than other parts of the world. This study aimed to identify all t...
متن کاملPRIMARY BILI A RY CIRRHOSIS IN A PATIENT WITH PROGRESSIVE SYSTEMIC SCLEROSIS. A CASE REPORT
A 63-year-old woman suffering from progressive systemic sclerosis for about 20 years disclosed symptoms of liver disease within the last three years. Diagnosis of biliary cirrhosis was established on the basis of clinical picture, pathological examination of the hepatic tissue sample, immunological tests, and x-ray studies. Association of systemic sclerosis with primary biliary cirrhosis is...
متن کاملLymphocyte transformation in response to phytohaemagglutinin in primary biliary cirrhosis: the search for a plasma inhibitory factor.
The aim of this study was to determine the importance of plasma inhibitory factors in producing the impaired phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-induced lymphocyte transformation that is seen in some patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Twenty-six normal subjects and 12 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis were studied. The lymphocytes from each subject were cultured in the presence of autologous ...
متن کاملPlasma cysteine and sulphate levels in patients with cirrhosis of the liver.
1. Fasting levels of plasma cysteine, plasma sulphate and the plasma cysteine/sulphate ratio were measured in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and compared with those in patients with other liver disease, general intensive therapy unit patients and healthy subjects. 2. Plasma cysteine was significantly elevated in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (median 0.364 nmol/mg of protein, ...
